Current account

You will need cash from the first day of your stay in Germany. You can change a smaller amount in your home country, but you have to be aware of the exchange regulations of your home country.

Please be aware that bank notes up to 50 Euros are accepted almost everywhere but larger denomination notes can be refused. You can bring your home currency and exchange it at currency exchance bureaux at airports, larger train stations or those located in many cities.

For a longer stay in Greifswald you will need a current account. Your salary will be transferred on it and you can transfer money e.g. your rent or pay other bills cashless. In most cases you can also arrange online-banking.

Credit cards are not as widely used in Germany as in other countries. However, an EC card (a type of debit card) issued by your bank can be used almost everywhere. Cash machines are generally available 24 hours a day at most banks.

Documents you will need for opening a current account:

- Registration certificate from the Local Registration Office (for your address)
- your Passport
